Meta Tags

Meta Tags are part of your code which are hidden from visitors and visible to search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc. These Meta Tags are importance because it gives information to the search engines regarding the page of your website. Generally, when crawlers or spiders visit your website or any page of your website, they try to get as much information which they can get to give a rank to any page according to the content available on it.
Meta Tags provide information regarding a page to search engines, so that they can categorize a page accordingly and provide the best search result. They are inserted into the HTML document and made invisible to visitors.

Meta Tags are highly used for On-Page Search Engine Optimization by Search Engine Marketers. SEO consultants are professional who are good knowledge of functioning of search engines and they help webmasters to design the web project in such a which gives high visibility to the search engines. But with time, as the crawlers have become more intelligent and because of that importance of Meta Tags have also decreased but still it is very important for search engines. It is always advisable for website owners not to use any unethical ways to get a good ranking because once booked for unethical behavior by search engines, they will stop listing pages from your website and this will hit you very badly. So have patience and go for ethical ways for Search Engine Optimization and reap the benefits.

There are basically four major meta tags that you can use:
    • The only resource type that is currently in use is "document" This is the only tag that you need to put in for indexing purposes, but use of the others is a good idea.
    • Depending on the search engine, this will be displayed along with the title of your page in an index. "content" could be a word, sentence or even paragraph to describe your page. Keep this reasonably short, concise and to the point. However, don't be so mean with your description that its not an appropriate reflection of the contents!
    • Choose whatever keywords you think are appropriate, seperated by commas. Remember to include synoyms, americanisms and so on. So, if you had a page on cars, you might want to include keywords such as car, cars, vehicles, automobiles and so on.
    • Content should contain either global, local or iu (for Internal Use). To be perfectly honest, I can't quite get my head around this one; its supposed to list available resources designed to allow the use to find things easily, but I still don't quite get it. My advice is to stick to "global".
